𝟭. 𝗛𝗮𝘇𝗲𝗹𝗻𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀

Each tree produces separate male and female flowers. The long yellow catkins release pollen, while the tiny red female flowers eventually grow into hazelnuts!

𝟮. 𝗛𝗮𝘇𝗲𝗹𝗻𝘂𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘆

Oregon grows over 99% of U.S. hazelnuts! The Willamette Valley’s mild climate and fertile soil make the valley an ideal home for hazelnut orchards.

𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻, 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗮𝘇𝗲𝗹’𝘀 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲🌰

For Calvin Penkauskas, hazelnuts have been part of the story long before Hazel’s Heritage began.

While studying biology and environmental science at the University of Oregon, Calvin became involved in agricultural and ecological research right here in the Willamette Valley. Working alongside researchers and local farmers, he studied Oregon hazelnut orchards, pest management, soil health, and how regenerative farming practices can support both agriculture and the surrounding ecosystem.

That experience gave him a unique perspective on one of Oregon’s most important crops - 𝗵𝗮𝘇𝗲𝗹𝗻𝘂𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺𝘀, 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀!

After graduate school, Calvin spent a couple of years with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, working directly with Oregon farmers and landowners on soil health, habitat restoration, and sustainable agricultural practices.

Today, he continues his research at the University of Oregon while bringing that same curiosity and appreciation for Oregon agriculture to Hazel’s Heritage.

𝗛𝗮𝘇𝗲𝗹’𝘀 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘄 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

We’re a small Eugene-based company creating hazelnut foods and drinks inspired by the crop, landscape, and community that make this corner of Oregon special.

For Calvin, it’s a chance to take years of learning about hazelnuts and turn that knowledge into something you can actually share around a table, and...
